FAQ

Frequently asked questions about tax and accounting

Straight answers about deadlines, documents, HST, payroll and working with our bilingual CPA team.

Who do you work with?

We serve individuals and small and medium-sized businesses across Ontario: employees, families, retirees, newcomers, self-employed professionals, corporations and holding companies.

Can you provide your services in French?

Yes. AN Accounting and Tax Services is a bilingual firm. You can work with our chartered professional accountants entirely in English or in French.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. Your first consultation is free. We discuss your situation, explain the options and give you a clear quote before any work begins.

Do I need to meet you in person?

No. We work with clients across Ontario remotely by phone, video call and secure document sharing, so you can get everything done without travelling.

What is the deadline to file my personal tax return?

For most individuals, the deadline to file and pay is April 30. If you or your spouse or common-law partner earned self-employment income, you have until June 15 to file, but any balance owing is still due April 30.

What documents do I need for my personal tax return?

Typically your T4 and other tax slips, RRSP and FHSA contribution receipts, childcare, medical and donation receipts, rental or self-employment records, and last year’s notice of assessment. We send you a personalized checklist.

I have not filed taxes in a few years. Can you help?

Yes. We can prepare your missing returns, help you deal with the CRA and get you back into good standing, which also restores benefits such as the GST/HST credit.

Should I incorporate my business?

It depends on your income, how much of it you need personally, your liability risk and your growth plans. We compare the costs and the tax impact so you can decide with confidence.

When is a corporation’s T2 return due?

A T2 corporate return is due six months after the end of the corporation’s tax year. Taxes owing are generally due two or three months after year-end, depending on the corporation’s situation.

When do I have to register for GST/HST?

Generally, once your taxable revenues exceed $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters, you are no longer a small supplier and must register. You can also register voluntarily before that point.

How long should I keep my business records?

The CRA generally requires you to keep books, records and supporting documents for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to.

Can you take over my payroll from another provider?

Yes. We handle the transition, including year-to-date amounts, so your employees’ pay, deductions and T4s remain accurate.

My bookkeeping is behind. Where do I start?

Contact us. We will assess your records, prioritize what the CRA needs first and bring your books up to date with a catch-up plan.
